Third Party Certification

Fire Doors and Third Party Certification

Third party product certification provides an additional level of assurance of both the level and consistency of performance relevant to the intended application.
It provides an independent, technical process for evaluating and approving systems, activities or products (and in some cases, individuals) against a set of defined criteria in standards and procedures.

Focus is on fitness for purpose. The certificate demonstrates that the relevant requirements set out in the criteria are met – not just once, but consistently.

Although third party certification is voluntary, it is often a requirement of the industry and is strongly endorsed by ASDMA, with a long record of use.

Fire doors are a life safety product intended to protect escape routes by preventing the spread of fire and smoke, designed to mitigate risks and limit harm and damage from fire.

It is a legal requirement for fire door manufacturers to provide test evidence to show their product’s ability to resist fire. Once tested, the fire door must be manufactured to the same configuration, and in line with the approved scope.

Third party certification provides reassurance that the product is produced to the same specification and quality as that originally tested, and that the original test behaviour is reliably maintained.

  • Scrutiny of the validity of the full range of available test evidence.
  • Approval of the scope of application for the product, and allowable variations.
  • Determination of the components able to be used in approved door assembly systems.
  • Confirmation of the application of appropriate quality and production control systems.
  • Ability to carry out investigations of factors that influence fire performance, where there is cause to do so.
  • Independent product auditing and repeat testing as a routine of certification.

Plus

An additional route for raising questions – through the independent certification body, as well as the manufacturer and installer.
Processes are also subject to peer review by the industry, where the relevant expertise and knowledge resides.
